Selection Guide of Silicone Oil Emulsions for Polyamide (Nylon) Textiles
The biggest pain point of polyamide: it is prone to yellowing during high-temperature heat setting (180–210°C). Its isoelectric point is around pH≈6. Anionic silicone emulsions are liable to break and form oil spots on fabrics. The core of product selection is yellowing control and matching of ionic properties.
Key distinction: Amino-modified silicone oils act as primary softeners. EM2121/EM2123 are pure dimethyl PDMS emulsions. They can only deliver auxiliary lubrication and cannot be used alone for polyamide softening finish.
✅ Recommendations by hand feel / fabric application scenarios
-
White / light-colored polyamide (spandex fabric, polyamide knit, chiffon; most common grade) 【First Choice】
Recommended: Low-yellowing side-chain amino silicone microemulsion, amine value 0.3~0.4 mmol/g
Ionic type: Nonionic / weak cationic (nonionic preferred for better compatibility with anionic pretreatment auxiliaries)
Features: Side-chain amino structure brings very low yellowing ΔE upon high-temperature treatment compared with conventional terminal amino silicone oils. It endows polyamide with silky touch and resilience, improves tear strength and offers good wash fastness.
Benchmark grades:
Imported: Dow XIAMETER MEM-8031 (50% solids content, nonionic, universal for polyamide/polyester, low yellowing), Dow Inc.
Domestic: Runhe RH-NB-629B (weak cationic, suitable for polyamide woven and knitted fabrics), Ningbo Runhe High...
-
Requirement: soft & slippery handfeel while retaining hydrophilicity (polyamide underwear, sportswear fabrics, moisture absorption requirement)
Recommended: Ternary block copolymer silicone emulsion (amino + polyether copolymerized)
Features: Extremely low yellowing; will not render fabrics fully hydrophobic. It balances softness and smoothness. Fabrics remain moisture-absorbent and breathable without stuffiness, and exhibits good bath stability for padding / exhaust processes.
Example: MT-8188 hydrophilic silicone for synthetic fibers, specially developed for polyamide and polyester, pH tolerance range: 3–10
-
Dark-colored polyamide (high tolerance to yellowing, pursuing full and oily slippery handfeel)
Recommended: Weak cationic side-chain amino silicone oil, amine value 0.4~0.5 mmol/g
Amine value should not exceed 0.5; otherwise yellowing will be significantly aggravated during high-temperature curing. High amine value products are only suitable for dark fabrics.
Representative grade: Runhe RH-NB-593G-5, quaternized copolymer type, provides oily slippery and fluffy handfeel, suitable for polyamide core-spun yarn and mink-like fabrics, Ningbo Runhe High...
-
Only surface lubrication & luster required (yarn smoothness, no demand for long-lasting softness)
Recommended: EM2121 / EM2123 (conventional dimethyl silicone emulsion, nonionic PDMS)
⚠️ Important Reminder: NOT to be used alone as polyamide softener!
EM2121/2123 contain no amino functional groups and cannot adsorb onto polyamide fibers via chemical bonding. If used alone, the handfeel will largely disappear after 1–2 washes.
Usage: Incorporated as a blending component into amino silicone systems to enhance surface smoothness and luster. The addition dosage is generally 10–25% of total silicone mass.
❌ Not Recommended Types
Anionic amino silicone oil emulsions: The isoelectric point of polyamide is approximately pH 6. Anionic silicone emulsions tend to suffer emulsion breaking, oil bleeding and surface oil spots in polyamide finishing baths.
High amine value (>0.6) terminal amino silicone oils: Severe yellowing occurs under high-temperature heat setting. Prohibited for light-colored polyamide fabrics.
