What viscosity of dimethyl silicone oil is generally recommended for addition to pure oils and fats?
For incorporation into pure oils and fats including mineral oil, synthetic oil and vegetable oil, the recommended viscosity range at 25°C is 350–1000 cSt, among which 500 cSt is the most widely used. Choose 1000 cSt for superior lubrication and anti-wear performance, while 350 cSt works better for viscosity reduction and improved fluidity.
Recommended Viscosity & Performance
-
350 cSt: It features great versatility and excellent compatibility with pure oils and fats. It achieves balanced effects on viscosity reduction, fluidity and defoaming, and is suitable for low-temperature and low-viscosity base oils.
-
500 cSt (First Choice): It delivers the best overall performance with reliable lubrication, sealing and anti-migration capabilities, fitting for most pure oil and fat systems.
-
1000 cSt: It forms a strong oil film, provides outstanding anti-wear property and low volatility, making it ideal for high-temperature, heavy-duty and high-viscosity base oils.
-
Viscosity ≤ 100 cSt: This grade is only applicable to rapid defoaming, ultra-low temperature and ultra-low viscosity base oils. It tends to migrate easily and forms weak oil film, so it is not suggested for regular lubrication scenarios.
-
Viscosity ≥ 5000 cSt: Products in this range are liable to delaminate and hard to disperse. They are merely used for high-viscosity damping and sealing, and shall be applied with caution in pure oils and fats.
Dosage & Compatibility
The typical addition amount is 0.5%–5%. The dosage is controlled at 1%–3% for lubrication purposes and 0.1%–1% for defoaming.
Dimethyl silicone oil shows good compatibility with non-polar pure oils and fats such as mineral oil and synthetic hydrocarbons. A preliminary compatibility test is necessary before using it with polar oils like esters and polyethers to avoid delamination.
